Hello! My name is Ray, and even though we’ve never met before, you know where I live! I want to invite you into my backyard and ask for your help in building our paradise. You might be thinking, “I don’t know you, Ray! How could I even help you today?” Let me explain by sharing my story.
I have always believed in giving back to my community, whether by volunteering at soup kitchens or working with adults with disabilities. This passion for service always led me to welcoming spaces. However, my life took an unexpected turn in 2019 when I was diagnosed with cancer in my leg. My world changed in an instant.
The subsequent amputation of my leg and being shuffled between hospitals left me longing for stability and reliable care. Despite my generally positive outlook, this period was filled with distress and uncertainty.
In early 2020, I found a new beginning at Deer Lodge Centre’s Chronic Care Unit. It marked the start of my healing journey, a chance to rediscover myself amid adversity.
Finding Community and Purpose at Deer Lodge Centre
Contrary to what I initially thought, my opportunities to stay involved in the community didn’t diminish after moving here. In fact, I’ve never been busier! I’ve found friendship, support, and a caring community at Deer Lodge Centre.
We are currently working on an exciting project: renovating our courtyard into an accessible and welcoming outdoor space. And this is where you come in.
Imagine the difference you could make by giving someone like me the gift of sunshine and fresh air. Our 37-year-old courtyard is currently hard to access due to uneven ground and overgrown weeds. For now, when I want to enjoy the outdoors, I have to go to the front lawn facing Portage Avenue, where I’m met with wind, dust, exhaust, and the constant noise of traffic.
But with your support, our courtyard can become a green paradise. We envision wide paths leading to raised garden beds and water features, creating serene spaces where residents can enjoy quiet lunches in the shade. Your generosity will make this vision a reality, providing a safe and beautiful outdoor space for all of us.
I am so passionate about this project that I’ve even fundraised for it by growing out my hair for donations. By the time I cut it, I had raised $26,000! However, we still need more support to fully realize our dream.
How You Can Help
Your donation, no matter the size, will help us transform our courtyard into a haven of joy and tranquillity. Without your support, this project may be delayed significantly. Please consider being part of this vital upgrade. Together, we can build a space that brings fresh air to those who find the outside world just out of reach.
