About the Quilter

SUSAN MOXLEY COTE has been an X-Ray Technologist at Deer Lodge Centre for 15 years — and a quilter for 12. She presented this exquisite work of art to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation in April 2016.

“I thought it would be a lovely way to honour our veterans and to raise funds to support the services they receive here at Deer Lodge Centre,” she says.

Her inspiration was the famous poem by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, which begins:

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row…”

Susan says she took great time and care in finding the perfect fabric for the quilt, which took over 40 hours of work to put together.

She retired from Deer Lodge on January 20, 2017 but will continue to work at the Centre on a casual basis. “I’m way past retirement age but I’m not ready to leave. I love the people I work with, I love the patients. We’re all part of this family. I’ve felt that nowhere else. Working with the patients and residents here has also taught me how to help my own parents.”
