Jim Kurz, the Board Chair of the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, embodies dedication and a deep commitment to enhancing healthcare in Manitoba. His role is pivotal in driving the Foundation’s mission forward, and his journey reflects both his personal values and professional expertise.
A Vital Role in Healthcare
In his capacity as Board Chair, Jim Kurz manages a range of responsibilities that are crucial to the Foundation’s success. His primary focus is on raising awareness about Deer Lodge Centre and leading fundraising initiatives. “One of my main duties is to bring awareness to the city of Winnipeg and Manitoba about what Deer Lodge Centre is all about,” Jim explains. “The main duty is fundraising, which is essential for supporting the Foundation’s various projects and ensuring that we can continue to provide top-notch care.”
Jim’s role involves not only promoting the Foundation’s work but also engaging with the community to foster support and understanding. “It’s about making sure that people know what Deer Lodge Centre offers and the impact we have on the community,” he adds. “Our mission goes beyond just providing healthcare; it’s about improving lives and making a difference.”
Understanding Deer Lodge Centre
Deer Lodge Centre, the third-largest health center in Manitoba, is a cornerstone of comprehensive care, serving a wide range of patients with diverse needs. “To me, Deer Lodge Centre is a hidden gem,” Jim says with enthusiasm. “It’s an incredible facility that many people don’t fully understand. The breadth of services we offer, from dementia and Parkinson’s care to bariatrics and outpatient services, is truly impressive.”
Jim was drawn to Deer Lodge Centre not only because of its size and scope but also because of the depth of care provided. “When I first learned about the center’s extensive services, I knew I wanted to be involved,” he reflects. “The work we do here is essential, and it’s a privilege to be part of an organization that makes such a significant impact on people’s lives.”
The Foundation’s Impact
The Deer Lodge Centre Foundation plays a crucial role in enhancing and supporting the health center’s capabilities. “The Foundation is instrumental in addressing the health center’s needs through special projects and initiatives,” Jim explains. “We’re involved in everything from renovations to funding new equipment, and our work helps improve the quality of care for our patients.”
One of the most notable projects undertaken by the Foundation was the refurbishment of the T7 dementia unit. “This was a massive undertaking and the largest project we’ve ever tackled,” Jim says. “The renovation transformed the dementia ward, creating a more supportive and comfortable environment for patients and their families. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, and it reinforced the importance of our work.”
Currently, the Foundation is spearheading a major capital campaign to renovate the center’s courtyard. “The courtyard was once a beautiful space, but it has become outdated and unsafe,” Jim notes. “We’re looking to raise between $1 to $1.5 million to completely renovate it. This project is vital for creating a safe and welcoming environment for patients and families, and I’m confident that with the support of Manitobans and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, we can achieve this goal.”
Building Awareness and Support
Jim emphasizes the importance of continuous engagement and communication with the community. “Repetitiveness is key to our success. We need to consistently update people on our activities, achievements, and future plans,” he asserts. “Deer Lodge Centre was once considered a well-kept secret, but as more people learn about the incredible work we do, they’re genuinely impressed.”
Jim’s approach to raising awareness involves leveraging personal networks and sharing stories that highlight the Foundation’s impact. “When I talk to people about Deer Lodge Centre, I often hear surprise and admiration,” he says. “Many are unaware of the full scope of our services and the positive changes we’re making. It’s rewarding to see their reactions and know that we’re making a difference.”
Personal Fulfillment and Future Goals
Jim finds great personal satisfaction in his role at the Foundation. “Being on the board allows me to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” he shares. “It’s important for me to set an example for my children and show them the value of contributing to something greater than oneself. Volunteering and supporting our healthcare system is a way to give back and make a positive impact.”
Looking ahead, Jim is excited about the future of Deer Lodge Centre and the opportunities for further growth and improvement. “Deer Lodge Centre has evolved from a Veterans’ hospital into a major health center serving a diverse population,” he notes. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the future and how we can continue to enhance the services we provide.”
Jim Kurz’s leadership and commitment are instrumental in advancing the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation’s mission. His efforts are not only helping to improve healthcare in Manitoba but also inspiring others to support and contribute to this vital cause. As the Foundation continues to grow and evolve, Jim’s dedication ensures that Deer Lodge Centre remains a beacon of hope and excellence in healthcare.
