Meet Gillian Barnes, the Speech Language Pathologist at the Movement Disorder Clinic at Deer Lodge Health Centre. People with Parkinson Disease can experience difficulties swallowing their food and liquids. Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) are specially trained in assessing and treating dysphagia (swallowing difficulty). Assessment may include a Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS), which helps identify specific areas of difficulty within the pharynx and esophagus. The Speech Language Pathologist can then provide recommendations and strategies to help people get their nutrition and hydration safely. They also provide follow up and recommendations for referrals to other medical professionals.
