At the heart of Winnipeg’s Deer Lodge Centre lies a beacon of hope and support for individuals grappling with movement disorders: the Movement Disorder Clinic. Within this specialized clinic, a team of dedicated healthcare professionals works tirelessly to provide comprehensive care and assistance to patients facing conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and more.
Gillian Barnes, Speech Language Pathologist
Gillian is an integral part of the Movement Disorder Clinic’s team, specializing in addressing one of the often-overlooked challenges faced by individuals with Parkinson’s disease—swallowing difficulties. As a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), Gillian is adept at assessing and treating dysphagia, a condition that can significantly impact a person’s ability to swallow food and liquids safely. Through assessments like the Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS), Gillian identifies specific areas of difficulty within the pharynx and esophagus, enabling her to provide tailored recommendations and strategies to ensure proper nutrition and hydration.
Her expertise extends beyond assessment, as she also offers ongoing support and facilitates referrals to other medical professionals as needed.
Tara Chreptyk, Physiotherapist
Tara brings her expertise as a physiotherapist to the Movement Disorder Clinic, where she addresses a wide range of concerns related to movement disorders. From issues affecting balance and mobility to challenges with transfers, fall risks, activity tolerance, and posture, Tara’s goal is clear: to minimize the impact of symptoms and optimize functional abilities and quality of life for her patients. Through thorough assessments and personalized interventions, Tara empowers individuals to navigate their movement disorders with confidence and resilience.
Michelle Mooney, Occupational Therapist
Michelle Mooney plays a pivotal role in supporting clients both within the clinic and in their homes as an Occupational Therapist (OT). With a focus on enhancing safety and functionality, Michelle assists clients in adapting their environments to meet their unique needs. Whether it’s identifying equipment requirements, accessing resources and supports, or implementing practical tools for daily living, Michelle is dedicated to ensuring her clients remain independent and active participants in their day-to-day activities.
